HISTORY OF THE SHHF

The Siberian Husky Health Foundation was formed in early 2004 by a group of long-time Siberian fanciers. These people are very familiar with the problems facing the breed and are dedicated to maintaining funding for research into genetic diseases that plague the Siberian Husky and other breeds.

Because research into the genetic and health problems that affect Siberian Huskies, as well as other breeds, is of vital importance, this Foundation was formed in order to provide continuity of funding for that research.

From the outset, the Foundation realized that it would be critical for the success of fund-raising efforts that donations be tax-deductible to the extent provided by law. The IRS granted the Foundation a 501(c)(3) designation, which is given to not-for-profit charitable organizations. The Siberian Husky Health Foundation will use donations to fund important research, as well as to conduct periodic health surveys to uncover emerging problems in the breed.

We're working closely with the Canine Health Foundation to find and fund research into the health and genetic problems commonly found in Siberians, including but not limited to hereditary eye disease, hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and retained testicles.

The founding members and trustees are:

  • Jan Ahlgren
  • Linda Albright
  • Shira Barkon
  • Sandy Carman
  • Jeanette DiBalsi
  • Joy Graeme Messinger
  • Kathleen Stryeski
  • Fain Zimmerman
